Reading

All about Reading in Churchill Primary School

In school we teach phonics using the Letters and Sounds programme, supported by the use of Jolly Phonics kinaesthetic actions and stories and encourage children to read high frequency and sight words.

Once children have a secure knowledge of letter/sound correspondences and can blend words confidently, they access our Book Banded reading scheme. Our scheme mainly has books from 'Phonics Bugs' which is complimented by other schemes to provide breadth and enrichment and a variety of reading genres.

There are fiction and non-fiction books within each level.
Children are encouraged to self-select their reading book to bring home. They also have access to a library and book boxes in EYFS to share books with their parents to encourage a love of reading.

Once children can read fluently and with good understanding, we have a 'free-reader' scheme.

Reading is a key aspect of success in learning. We encourage our children to read at least 5 times a week at home to support their progress.
